This little fella has eleven months of peace and one month of absolute war — and September is coming. Mr. Magpie doesn't care who you are, what you've done, or how fast you think you can run. You entered his postcode. That was your first mistake. Your last mistake was thinking that helmet would help. He's mapped every jogger, every cyclist, every school kid, and every tradie in a two-block radius and he remembers every single one of you from last year. He holds grudges the way other birds hold worms. He's got a beak like a switchblade, wings like a fighter jet, and the element of surprise that would make the SAS jealous. He doesn't swoop once. He swoops until the point is made. And the point is always made. You've seen the videos. You've seen grown men scream. You've seen cyclists abandon their bikes and run into traffic because traffic is safer. Cable ties on your helmet won't save you. Eyes drawn on the back of your hat won't save you. Running won't save you. He's faster. He's smarter. And he's already behind you. The government put up signs. He can't read. Councils drew maps of swooping zones. He expanded his territory out of spite. For eleven months of the year he's a beautiful, iconic Australian songbird with one of the most gorgeous calls in the natural world. And for one month he is a heat-seeking missile made of feathers and fury. You don't walk through September. You survive it.
